EV, PHEV or HEV? The difference in plain English

Three kinds of electrified car, three ways to charge and drive. Here is what each one means for you.

Hybrid (HEV)

A petrol engine works with a small battery and electric motor. You never plug it in. The battery charges itself when you brake, and the car switches between petrol and electric on its own.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

A bigger battery you charge from a power point or charger, plus a petrol engine for longer trips. Charge it every night and most daily driving can be electric.

Electric (EV)

Battery only. You charge at home, at work or at public chargers. No petrol, fewer moving parts and lower running costs.

Which one suits you?

  • Short daily trips, can charge at home: EV or PHEV
  • Long country drives, few chargers nearby: PHEV or HEV
  • No off-street parking: HEV, or an EV if public charging is close by
